Unemployment

Youth Unemployment
Unemployment and NEET rates for youth aged 15–34, from the Stats SA QLFS.
Notes: Youth unemployment (ages 15–34) from QLFS Q4 2025. SA has one of the highest youth unemployment rates globally. The expanded rate includes discouraged work-seekers and is particularly high among 15–24 year olds.
Labour Force Participation
Labour force participation rates by gender and overall, from the Stats SA QLFS.
Notes: Labour force participation rate (LFPR) measures the share of the working-age population (15–64) that is either employed or actively looking for work. South Africa's LFPR is low by international standards, partly reflecting high rates of discouragement.
Inflation & CPI
Monthly headline CPI, food inflation, and annual average inflation from Stats SA.
Notes: CPI figures are year-on-year % change. SARB inflation target was changed to 3% (±1pp) on 12 November 2025 from the previous 3–6% band. Repo rate decisions made at MPC meetings approx. 6× per year. Update by running: python scripts/update_inflation.py
GDP & Economic Growth
Quarterly and annual real GDP growth, nominal GDP, and GDP per capita from Stats SA.

Interest Rates
SARB repo rate and prime lending rate from MPC statements.
Notes: Repo rate is the rate at which the SARB lends to commercial banks. Prime lending rate = Repo + 3.5%. Both are the primary levers of South African monetary policy.
Crime Statistics
Annual crime figures by category from SAPS, including murder and contact crimes.
Notes: SAPS publishes crime stats once per year in September. No public API. Data must be manually extracted from the published Excel workbooks. Latest available: 2023/24. Update by running: python scripts/update_crime.py (manual step required — see script comments)
Education
Matric pass rates, literacy rates, and higher education enrolment from DBE and Stats SA.
Notes: Matric pass rates are published in January each year. Literacy rates come from Census (10-year cycle). Update matric results by running: python scripts/update_education.py

Total population, urbanisation rate, and median age from Stats SA mid-year estimates.
Notes: Census 2022 is the definitive source. Mid-year estimates (P0302) are published annually in July and provide intercensal estimates. Update by running: python scripts/update_population.py

Access to piped water, electricity, and formal dwelling data from Census 2022 and GHS.

Notes: Census 2022 data is static until the next census. No automation needed. These figures are definitive.

Notes: Provincial unemployment rates from QLFS Q3 2025 release. Q4 2025 provincial breakdown available Feb 2026. Western Cape consistently the lowest. North West and Eastern Cape consistently the highest. Population figures from Census 2022 and mid-year 2024 estimates.
